Wildland

Project OvervieW

Wildland is one of four distinctive restaurant projects Falling Waters Landscape collaborated on for restaurateur John Resnick and Chef Eric Bost in Carlsbad. Conceived as a "big new concept" for Resnick, the project underwent an extensive development period, taking well over five years to be fully realized. This establishment strategically functions as a fast-casual eatery during the day, then transforms into a seated dining experience at night. Try the Pizza Sandwich and the Mafaldine… *chef’s kiss*

Project Highlights

Our design for Wildland aimed to create an "inviting" atmosphere that immediately evokes a "come on in" sentiment, making the space feel earthy and organic and distinctly evocative of the coast. To achieve this, we incorporated a huge tree at the front of the building, significantly softening the facade of the original warehouse-like structure. The chosen plant palette, including free-flowing grasses, was deliberately selected to emphasize natural movement rather than stiff hedges clipped precision. Wildland offers a diverse menu, from fresh breads and sandwiches to pizzas, pastas, and steaks cooked in a pizza oven, designed to foster a fun, communal environment perfect for social gatherings. Our role was to serve as a supporting cast member, subtly accentuating the overall ambiance and culinary experience while navigating unique public space requirements like ADA compliance and alcohol and beverage regulations.

Team

In these collaborative restaurant ventures, Falling Waters Landscape works alongside talented partners to bring the restaurateur's vision to life. For Wildland, key collaborators included restaurateur John Resnick and the highly accomplished design firm Bells and Whistles. We value working with such humble, approachable, and collaborative professionals, as their collective expertise elevates the entire project.
