Olde Del Mar
project highlights
Perched above the Pacific in coastal Del Mar, this contemporary home—masterfully reimagined by architect Jennifer Charleston Porter—balances restraint with richness. The landscape was conceived as a living extension of the architecture: modern, enduring, and rooted in place.
The plant palette is coastal and sculptural, featuring bold forms like agaves, phormium, and yucca interwoven with native textures and ornamental grasses. Weathered steel planters and corten steps contrast the home’s crisp lines, while softening the transition from architecture to earth. A sinuous pool and spa reflect the home’s geometry while echoing the coastline just beyond.
Stone, concrete, and natural wood are repeated throughout the outdoor spaces, grounding the modern structure with organic materials. Custom hardscape detailing, from ribbon pebbles to monolithic granite steps, adds quiet richness without excess.
The outdoor kitchen, lounge areas, and layered plantings encourage movement and gathering throughout the site. At night, subtle lighting brings warmth and shadow to the minimalist forms.
