Mid-Century Light
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Hidden in the inland hills of Solana Beach, this modernist residence—originally designed by iconic San Diego architect Lloyd Ruocco—was thoughtfully revitalized with a landscape that honors the home’s architectural roots while introducing a fresh, contemporary sensibility. This marks the third collaboration with this longtime client, reflecting a deepening trust and shared design vision.
The landscape design balances restraint and hospitality. A clean, geometric pool with an integrated spa serves as the focal point, surrounded by oversized limestone pavers from Eco-Outdoor and low, architectural plantings. Custom black umbrellas and sleek loungers create an understated resort-like atmosphere.
Terraced plantings knit the home into its sloped site, creating a lush yet structured transition between levels. A large covered outdoor pavilion anchors the lower terrace, complete with a lounge, fireplace, dining space, and outdoor kitchen—crafted for California-style entertaining. Natural textures like woven pendants and plastered masonry walls provide warmth against the crisp material palette.
Native and climate-appropriate plants define the planting scheme—blending form, function, and sustainability. The result is a refined landscape that feels both lived-in and luxurious, modern yet timeless, and deeply rooted in its Southern California context.
