Basswood

A towering Ficus dominates the scene in this wooded backyard

Project OvervieW

Adrian and Jessica wanted to pay homage to the previous owners of this split level in the Rancho Carlsbad neighborhood. While we did remove some trees and old plants, we kept the star of the show - a 70yr old Ficus benjamina. The Ficus was the home to a dilapidated tree house and was surrounded by a termite-ridden deck. The spaces were not well defined and nothing had been done to the yard in decades. We proposed an aggressive program with multiple spaces to relax and play; and a palette that evoked a woody, moody and verdant vibe. The family are big-time entertainers, so an outdoor kitchen with plenty of shade and counter space was in order.

Thank you Adrian and Jessica (and the kids!) for trusting us to transform your backyard. It was a pleasure :)

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

The Biggest Challenges to Overcome: The site is dominated by a stately Ficus tree. There were discussions on removing it, but overall the decision was made to keep and work around the tree. We designed the hardscape and footbridge to have as small an impact as possible on the surface roots of the tree.

  • Core Design Solutions: With about 6’ of elevation change on a modest size yard, a solution of steps using decking, and concrete was devised. The ‘journey’ from one area to the next is slowed down on purpose - taking you around the tree - and narrowing the path which forces one to slow a bit and take in the surroundings.

  • Plant Palette: Woody, shade-loving mix including Fatsia japonica, Juncus patens, Mahonia ‘soft caress’, Juniperus torulosa, Carex, Ophiopogon and Microlepia strigosa aka ‘Lace Fern’

Custom Features: Cedar decking and footbridge, steel overhead shade structure
