A moody and rich outdoor shower with custom copper trim
Project OvervieW
For Caron and David, this home in Cardiff by the Sea isn’t a stepping stone—it’s their forever home. They asked us to transform a compact side yard and existing outdoor shower area into a highly functional, beautiful retreat that feels connected to their Craftsman-style residence and the coastal environment just beyond their doorstep. They wanted an outdoor space that feels calm and natural, but also intentional and organized—somewhere they can unwind after work, host friends, and enjoy the Southern California climate year-round.
Circulation, pool equipment, and lounging zones are all layered within a tight footprint. Sightlines and layout are carefully managed so the space feels generous, not squeezed. Materials and plantings are selected with longevity in mind, supporting low maintenance and long-term enjoyment as the garden and their life in this home continue to grow.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
The Biggest Challenges to Overcome: Issues with an existing utility easement along the south side yard made us have to shrink the width of the pool. Placement and screening of pool equipment and existing AC unit to preserve usable square-footage.
Core Design Solutions: We fit in a pool, patios, firepit and artificial turf play area on a fairly compact side yard footprint. There was existing hardscape in the side and front yard, so tying in the old and new was a challenge to make it all feel unified.
Plant Palette: Natural with formal repetition. A naturalistic palette keeps things soft and coastal, while repeated plant groupings add a subtle sense of order and rhythm. This balance of “casual” and “refined” ties the whole space together. Safari Sunset Leucadendrons, Dracaena marginata, Cleistocactus strausii, Lomandra longifolia ‘Breeze’, Asparagus densiflorus myers, Magnolia grandiflora, etc.
Custom Features: Water feature with copper scuppers, a built-in fire feature at the end of the pool. The design gives a nod to the moody colors of the home’s Craftsman character.
