PRACTICING PLAYFULNESS || What a week of hard work and youthful spirit can do
Through thick and thin Falling Waters showed up and braved the weather this past weekend to give visitors of the 34th Annual Garden Show an experience they would never forget. We were hesitant of how the audience and the panel would receive our display, but the response was unexpected and we are so blessed by the outcome.
PRACTICING PLAYFULNESS || 34th Annual Home & Garden Show
Yeah! It’s that time of year again where the sun is staying out longer, the plants are in full bloom, and the Home & Garden Show is in full swing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We have taken part in years past, but this year we are putting a spin on our ordinary submittal and are multi-tasking by promoting the necessity for children to get out and play, and also promoting one of our specialty projects: Flora Vista Elementary School.
COAST HWY 101 || Commercial Design Projects at FWL
US Highway 101 is the main artery on the United States’ Pacific Coast that links the North to the South. It was originally established to connect the Spanish missions, pueblos, and presidios that formed California centuries ago; however it now links the major cities that make up the West Coast. In San Diego the major throughway was overtaken by the I-5, and the Historic Route 101 is now a scenic route that hugs the coast of north county San Diego (from Oceanside to La Jolla). We have the unique opportunity to not only work by this monument of California but we have the pleasure of beautifying a portion that belongs to commercial buildings on the north end of Solana Beach…
OUR FAVORITE MATERIAL: CONCRETE || If designed and manufactured well, concrete can be a useful aesthetic to complete your garden
Let me rephrase: our favorite materials to use in the landscape are plants. We are not suggesting replacing your backyard with a concrete jungle; however, concrete, and its various finishes and colors, is an inexpensive, durable, and low-maintenance material that we use in every project.
BRINGING GREEN IN || The many benefits of houseplants
The inclusion of houseplants in living spaces is a huge craze that has been trending since the turn of the century and they are predicted to increase in popularity even more. Young adults are not moving into homes like their older generation was before them, instead they are content with their apartment, condo, or studio. Without a house, they do not have a built-in garden or backyard, yet they still have the desire to be surrounded by a living, green habitat… and in walks the houseplant…
DESIGN TRENDS OF 2018 || What we thought were the top 5 trends of last year
HAPPY NEW YEAR LANDSCAPE FRIENDS!
HERE ARE OUR THOUGHTS ON THE TOP 5 DESIGN TRENDS OF 2018:
(1) SMALL GARDENS
(2) ALFRESCO DINING
(3) DEXTEROUS DECKS
(4) SENSE OF ENCLOSURE
(5) INSPIRATION BY TRAVELING
OUR 2019 PREDICTIONS
More spaces designed for fun entertainment, more people are designing their homes to be all inclusive. I believe people backyards will become the hub of entertainment for family and friends.
A trend towards warmer colors of red and orange rather than stark greys and whites. There are cyclical trends from color to lack there off. We believe people are craving color and how the landscape can provide it.
Since people want the all inclusive yard they need versatile spaces that are both for casual days with family and also can be dressed up for a more formal occasion.
Also the trend of micro gardens used in small patios. This allows for gardening in any home type.
GET OUT AND PLAY || Why playing outdoors is vital to the growth of your child
Falling Waters has recently been assigned the unique opportunity to design and expand the garden area of the Flora Vista Elementary School playground. We are honored that the school has thought of us and we are very excited to use our unique landscape design strategies to help grow the children's understanding of the outside world.
Read on to see how we are going to approach this unique process…
HEDGES || The numerous benefits to a green screen
How do you choose to define a boundary?
You will see all different ways that homeowners try to distinguish their property from their neighbors. Monuments, fences, topography, and planting are all used to separate themselves from others.
REMOTE DESIGN || Oh, the places we would go!
Even though we pride ourselves on being a one-stop-shop, where a client can call for a consultation and a few months later walk outside to a total landscape makeover, we also love doing remote designs that clients can take and install on their own or use for a later date. We are currently growing this part of the company and welcome any and all design types.
Curious of how this works? Well these are the steps that we follow to execute a thought out and accurate design…
