New Project! Big Curves, Special View

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the old hills of Cardiff lies a home that may know all of our secrets. This home has a strong presence -- with defined lines and intense curves throughout the faces -- yet it sits back and subtly blends into its hillside as it watches us hustle and bustle through life.

With views that span from the Cardiff Kook, over the entire San Elijo Lagoon, and all the way to the tip of La Jolla on a clear day, the landscape of this home is really a part of the geography of the place. The air feels heavy with salt from the Ocean and the smell of the California Coastal Sage wafts up from the trails along the lagoon. This landscape feels wild and untamed...like it does what it wants and doesn’t listen to anyone and it’s been that way for years. The expansive view along with heavy sloping on each side of the home make you feel small. Like you’re sitting on one edge of the earth and time slows down for a bit while you look out and take it all in. I know...how dramatic! That’s what a good new project will do to you.

But really, we are so excited to be working on this project alongside Architect Trace Wilson of Materia LLC, and Designer Kris Lajeskie of Kris Lajeskie Designs. This is a renowned team and we can’t wait to see what kind of magic they work on this space.

We plan to work around the strange angles and curves of the home and insert a landscape design plan that compliments not only the new architecture of the home, but also the wildness of the nature that surrounds it. We want to create that feeling of being able to sit back and watch the world turn. A space where you can listen for the birds and watch the sun go down and then rise again. Infinity spa? Yep, seems like a good place to do it. Retaining walls of large boulders will address the heavy sloping and keep the natural, untamed feel of the landscape. Native shrubs, agave, and the existing palms will keep the plant palette fluid with the surroundings while adding a slightly updated look. This project is a great way to practice mindfulness of the space that surrounds us, and to be reminded that keeping things in their natural state is underrated. We’ll let the beauty of this home and landscape speak for itself. Stay tuned! More to come.
