Regional Landscape Design in Southern California

This past weekend the Pacific Horticulture Society and The Association of Professional Landscape Designers held an event at the Tree People headquarters at Coldwater Canyon park on Mulholland Dr. right above the foothills of Beverly Hills.  http://www.treepeople.org/  The event was to bring together Landscape Professionals from Southern California to share ideas and hear professional speakers talk specifically about regional design. Randy Baldwin is the General Manager of San Marcos Growers and spoke specifically about new plants from Australia that will be introduced into the states in the coming years. He has vast knowledge of plants and the cultivation of new varieties. Carol Bornstein is the Director of the Nature Gardens at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. and spoke about landscape design in Southern California. She shared information on landscapes both large and small. Lastly, the head speaker was Bernard Trainor, http://bernardtrainor.com/  a world renowned Landscape Architect working out of Carmel, California. His knowledge of design and the importance he places on the relationship between site, place and people was insightful and a reminder of my days at the Cal Poly Pomona Landscape Architecture Department. It was a privlage to get to some insight into his vast knowledge and to pick his brain personally. Their was a social event afterwards with cocktails and dinner which allowed more ideas to be shared through the night. The next day a small group along with Bernard and Carol took a hike at Coldwater Canyon Park and ended with an intensive conversation about design once agian. APLD and the Pacific Horticulture Society put on a great event in conjuntion with the Tree People Association and we hope to continue to build the APLD brand and always cultivate great relationships with the design community.
