Rimini
In the twisting winding streets of old Del Mar live some of the largest Torrey Pines in Southern California. Some of these trees are over 100 years old. They are huge, with enormous girth (up to 20’ circumference) and towering limbs.
When I first pulled up to Rimini St. I saw the existing house and thought, “oh no, a Torrey.” In my defense, they are a hot-button topic. Some people adore them and make every effort to preserve them, others secretly poison their neighbor’s tree to improve their view (no joke). They are beautiful, but like most beautiful things… they are high-maintenance.
Our lovely clients wanted to preserve the tree - thankfully. We conceived of a series of steps, volumes, elevation changes. A small journey on the way up to the Orange front entrance. Everything was softened and ‘feminized’ with Atlas fescue and rosemary.
The ‘after photos’ are still my favorite of any project.
