Oberlin

Oberlin Dr. is located in a commercial district of San Diego known for Tech and Medical companies. Our client, Dr. Alexander, was looking to relocate his Medical practice and purchased a Brutalist building in dire need of updating. We worked with Pacific Building Group (shout out to the PM Steve) and the Raymond Fox Group (renowned in the Medical design field) to reimagine the exterior of this building. The Alexander Surgery Center and Total T Clinic service a discerning clientele. The building and design needed to make patients (and employees) feel as though they weren’t in a medical building. We employed Shakkei, or ‘borrowed scenery’ techniques to bring the visitor outside while actually inside the waiting rooms. Custom copper Shishi Odoshi fountains were built to mimic traditional Japanese versions. They spill onto rocks and into hidden basins that recirculate the water. A subdued and monochromatic plant scheme softens the exposed aggregate of the building’s exterior.

Project Highlights

Innumerable parking spaces, Corten planters, delicately placed boulders, Karesansui gardens for the waiting rooms.
