HWY 101

Along the idyllic Highway 101 sits 5 low-slung concrete glass and timber buildings. Originally designed by S. Scott Emsley, an architect who worked with Organic Modernist Kendrick Bangs Kellogg. We were asked to update the landscape to be more appropriate for the style, climate and ongoing maintenance.

I took a brief trip to Palm Springs to get a bit of inspiration and stayed at ARRIVE Palm Springs, one of Chris Pardo’s hotels. The vibe and style informed the landscape design for the RSR buildings

We chose low-water - sometimes violent and aggressive - plants to stand up against the exterior of the buildings. Architectural agaves and Allouadias say “Look but don’t touch”. Acacias and cardboard palms soften the pallet.
